Research Focus

My research is focused on the use of statistical methods to detect genes that influence common diseases.  From 1982 until my retirement in 2008 I directed an international effort, the Genetic Analysis Workshops, whose goal is to compare the ability of different statistical methods to detect genetic effects on diseases and their risk factors.  These Workshops are ongoing.  My other research is focused on genetic control of risk factors for cardiovascular disease, diabetes, obesity, and other common diseases in minority populations:  (1)  The San Antonio Family Heart Study involves 1,400 members of extended Mexican American families.  In a genomic scan, we have localized numerous genes that influence quantitative risk factors for disease and are in the process of identifying some of those genes.  (2)  The Strong Heart Family Study is focused on genetic determinants of cardiovascular disease risk in 3,600 members of American Indian families in Arizona, Oklahoma, and the Dakotas.  This project, too, involves a genomic search for genes influencing disease risk.  We are using linkage analyses to localize these genes and have begun fine mapping.  (3)  In a project entitled Genetics of Coronary Artery Disease in Alaska Natives, we have recruited and examined 1,200 members of Eskimo families in several remote villages in the Norton Sound region of Alaska.  A genomic search for disease risk genes has begun.  (4)  In a project on the Genetics of Kidney Disease in Zuni Indians, we are recruiting and examining 1,000 members of Zuni families and are conducting a genomic search for genes contributing to nephropathy.
