Tours of Texas Biomed

We are excited you are considering a visit to the Texas Biomed campus. Due to increasing COVID-19 cases in the San Antonio community, we have temporarily suspended community tours and campus access to visitors; however, we still want to share all the amazing science and resources we have. We have several virtual tour programs available.

High School Tour Groups

High School Tour Groups

Tours of Texas Biomed are available for high schools. We offer in-person and virtual tours. Both in-person and virtual tours are approximately one-hour and include a conversation with one of our scientists. In-person tours are limited to 30 participants, including chaperones. Virtual tours can accommodate up to 50. Time slots for both types of tours are limited. Applications are required.

  • In Person Tour Application

    Thank you for your interest in an educational tour for high school students. In person tours are limited to high school students and their chaperones. No more than 30 participants per tour, including teachers and chaperones. Each tour is about 1 hour and includes a bus tour of the campus, weather permitting, and a presentation with Q&A by one of our scientists. Tours are available during the academic year, October through April. Slots fill up fast. Please allow at least 3 weeks to plan a tour.

    In Person High School Tour Application

    In person tours of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) are available for high school level courses, 9th grade through 12th grade. Each tour is limited to no more than 34 individuals, including students and chaperones. Younger children, including the teacher or chaperone children, are not permitted on the Texas Biomed campus.

    Cell phones are not permitted on tours of the animal care areas. In the event students bring cell phones on campus, the phones will be collected and placed in a secure area for the duration of the tour. Phones will be returned to the teacher for distribution after leaving the Texas Biomed campus.

    Tour availability is limited and will be honored on a first come, first serve basis. The Education Outreach Program Manager, Dr. Rosemary Riggs, will contact the coordinating teacher regarding tour availability and application status.

  • Virtual Tour Application

    Texas Biomed offers a limited number of virtual tours for 7th grade through 12th grade. Virtual tours include videos about Texas Biomed and a presentation with Q&A by one of our scientists. Virtual tours are through Zoom and can accommodate up to 50 students. Virtual tours are a great alternative for schools outside the San Antonio region. Slots fill up fast. Please allow at least 3 weeks to plan a tour.

    Texas Biomedical Research Institute Virtual High School Tour Application

    Virtual tours of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) are available for high school level courses, 9 th grade through 12 th grade. Virtual tours are conducted via Zoom and are well suited for classes and clubs. Virtual tours can be viewed as a class or individually. If viewed individually, virtual tours can accommodate up to 50 participants. If viewed as a class or club, the limit is up to the coordinating teacher.

    Virtual tours include videos of Texas Biomed labs and the Southwest National Primate Center as well as a conversation with a Texas Biomed researcher. It is optimal for the videos to be viewed by students prior to the Zoom. This will free up time for Q&A with the researcher. Virtual tours conclude with a Kahoot where students can compete for bragging rights about their knowledge about Texas Biomed.

    Virtual tour availability is limited and will be honored on a first come, first serve basis. Zoom links and links to videos will be sent to the coordinating teacher upon confirmation of the virtual tour.

College Tour Groups

College Tour Groups

In person tours of the Texas Biomedical Research Institute (Texas Biomed) are available for area colleges and universities in the fall, September and October. Tours of Texas Biomed may not include a tour of the Southwest National Primate Research Center (SNPRC). Tours of the SNPRC in the spring, February through April, are reserved for veterinary and anthropology related programs. Colleges and Universities may also request a seminar, virtual or in-person, from one of our team members.     Texas Biomedical Research Institute In Person College/University Tour Application

    Each tour is limited to no more than 30 individuals. Regardless of age, children of tour participants are not allowed on the tour of Texas Biomed campus.

    Cell phones are not permitted on tours of the animal care areas. In the event cell phones are brought on campus, it is expected they will remain off and out of sight. However, if preferable, phones can be collected and placed in a secure area for the duration of the tour. Phones will be returned for distribution prior to leaving the Texas Biomed campus.

    Availability for college/university tours is limited. The Research Education Director, Dr. Crystal Bolden-Rush or Research Education team member, will contact the coordinating professor regarding tour availability and application status.
